Bruce Wayne has been Batman for two years, yet Gotham remains in the grip of the Falcone and Maroni families. Their only hope is Harvey Dent, the prosecutor set to put both families on trial; alongside Gordon, Batman forms a secret alliance to assist him. Harvey is known for his lucky coin—a charming quirk that speaks volumes about his character: he never leaves anything to chance. When key witnesses begin to die one by one, Batman investigates a mob war involving corrupt police officers and a mole leaking information from within Dent’s inner circle. Meanwhile, Harvey becomes obsessed with winning the case, and Bruce—who admires him—fails to see the cracks forming. On the eve of the trial—the night of the winter solstice—an attack leaves Harvey disfigured. That night becomes Gotham’s longest: Two-Face is born, using his coin to decide who lives and who dies, starting with those who betrayed him. Batman manages to stop him, but cannot save him. Gotham loses its prosecutor and gains a villain, and Bruce realizes that what he lost that night was a form of hope.
