Diana has spent her entire life on Themyscira, the hidden island of the Amazons, shielded from the world of men. Her mother, Queen Hippolyta, keeps the truth about her origins a secret, while her aunt Antiope trains her for a war that, hopefully, will never come. When American pilot Steve Trevor crashes near the island, Diana breaks the oldest Amazonian rule and accompanies him back to his world. She finds herself overwhelmed by the noise, the traffic, the pervasive distrust, and the human habit of not saying what one truly thinks. Her first guide is Julia Kapatelis, a professor of Greek descent who takes her in and teaches her how modern civilization functions. Diana then meets Barbara Minerva, a brilliant and solitary archaeologist who studies Greek artifacts and becomes the first person to treat her as an equal. However, Circe—a sorceress who has spent centuries manipulating mortals—sees the perfect pawn in Barbara. Through deception and promises, she lures Barbara into a ritual intended to grant her power, only to curse her with the ferocity of a beast: Cheetah. Diana is forced to choose between saving her friend and stopping the creature she has become. The film does not conclude with a grand battle, but rather with a difficult decision: Diana manages to defeat Circe, yet she cannot fully save Barbara. She learns that her mission is not merely to fight, but also to show compassion.
