Weeks after the offensive on Central City, Brainiac ceases his attacks and begins collecting. His ship shrinks entire cities and stores them in glass bottles. Central City is the first, followed by Gotham, Metropolis, and others. The heroes—who had previously crossed paths in a rather disjointed fashion during the events in Central City—can no longer operate independently. Superman searches for the entity that abducted an entire city. Batman traces Brainiac’s technology to a LexCorp facility. Wonder Woman joins the fray when the signal reacts to artifacts from Themyscira. Flash is determined to recover the city that was bottled. Hal Jordan arrives with intelligence from the Green Lantern Corps, and J’onn J’onzz knows better than anyone what Brainiac did to Mars. Meanwhile, Victor Stone—a young athlete and son of the scientist Silas Stone—is left shattered following an accident at a LexCorp laboratory, where technology recovered from Brainiac is being studied. His father uses this technology to rebuild him. Thus, Cyborg is born, with a Mother Box integrated into his body—the only thing in the universe capable of speaking Brainiac’s language. The League only forms when forced to do so. The heroes clash over their respective methods, with the greatest tension existing between Superman and Batman. Cyborg serves as the key to their strategy, while J’onn acts as the emotional heart—after all, it was Brainiac who destroyed his world. The cities are liberated, Brainiac is defeated, and the heroes remain together, though they do not yet call themselves the “League.” Conclusion: Following two major incidents in Sector 2814, the Guardians appoint John Stewart as a Green Lantern. With the crisis over, Lex presents himself to the world as the man who funded the defense, and begins demanding accountability from the heroes. Cyborg’s Mother Box reacts to a signal that does not originate from Brainiac—it comes from Apokolips.
