Black Widow (2001)
Natasha Romanoff, a highly trained former KGB/Red Room assassin, is operating as a freelance operative in the post-Cold War underworld. S.H.I.E.L.D. (led by Nick Fury) targets her for recruitment or neutralization after a high-stakes extraction goes wrong. The story follows her moral gray area, a tense cat-and-mouse with S.H.I.E.L.D. agents (including an early Hawkeye appearance as the archer assigned to the op), and her gradual shift toward working with the Americans against a mutual threat involving leftover Soviet black-ops tech or a rogue handler. Climax involves a personal confrontation that forces her to choose sides. Post-credits or mid-credits: Fury files a report noting both Widow and the still-frozen Captain America as potential assets for a future “initiative.”
Captain America: The First Avenger (2001)
In 1942, frail but determined Steve Rogers repeatedly tries to enlist and is rejected until Dr. Abraham Erskine selects him for Project Rebirth. The Super-Soldier Serum transforms him into peak human form. He becomes a propaganda symbol (“Captain America”) before insisting on real combat. With the Howling Commandos and Peggy Carter, he takes the fight to HYDRA and the Red Skull. The climax involves a desperate mission against a super-weapon; Steve crashes a plane into the Arctic to stop it and is frozen in ice. Framing device or post-credits: modern-day S.H.I.E.L.D. recovers the ice and the shield, with Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson, continuing from the Iron Man cameo) overseeing the find.
The incredible Hulk (2000)
Brilliant but tormented scientist Bruce Banner is exposed to a gamma radiation experiment meant to recreate a lost Super-Soldier formula. He transforms into a raging green monster when his heart rate spikes. On the run from the military (led by a hard-nosed General Ross), Banner seeks a cure while trying to protect the people he loves, especially Betty Ross. The story is more grounded and tragic than pure spectacle: Banner’s internal conflict, the military’s desire to weaponize the Hulk, and a climactic confrontation in a city that forces Banner to choose between control and destruction. Ends with Banner still on the run, but with a quiet S.H.I.E.L.D. contact offering help… for a price. Post-credits: a brief glimpse of a mysterious blue cube in a secure facility (early Tesseract tease).
Iron Man (2000)
Start of a "What if" universe for the mcu that starts in 2000 with all the rights Tony Stark, charismatic billionaire weapons manufacturer and playboy genius, is captured in a war-torn region while demonstrating a new missile system. Forced to build a weapon for his captors, he instead constructs a crude powered armored suit and escapes. Back home he is changed: he shuts down the weapons division of Stark Industries, faces pushback from his longtime partner Obadiah Stane, and begins refining the suit into a high-tech flying weapon of personal accountability. The climax is a confrontation with Stane (in a bigger, bulkier prototype suit) that forces Tony to publicly declare “I am Iron Man.” Post-credits: a one-eyed government operative in a leather coat approaches Tony with an offer involving “a bigger picture.”
