Biography
Troye Sivan Mellet (Johannesburg, June 5, 1995) is a singer, songwriter, actor and YouTuber born in South Africa and naturalized Australian.
Troye was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. He was raised in an Orthodox Jewish family, although he does not consider himself religious - his father was born into a Jewish family of Lithuanian-Jewish descent and his mother converted to Judaism.
His family moved to Australia when he was two years old due to violence in the country. Troye currently lives in Los Angeles with Jacob Bixenman, his current boyfriend. He is from a Jewish family.
He attended Carmel School, a private institution of Modern Orthodox and Zionist Judaism, until 2009 when he began studying remotely. On August 7, 2010, Troye revealed to his family that he is gay, but it was only on August 7, 2013 (exactly 3 years later) that he announced it publicly in a video on his YouTube channel. Troye has a mild variation of Marfan Syndrome.
Troye performed on the 2006, 2007 and 2008 editions of the Television Western Australia telethon. The 2006 performance included a duet with Australian Idol winner Guy Sebastian. His first album, Dare to Dream, was released in 2008.
In May 2013, when the Artists and Repertoire Manager at EMI heard the young man singing a song he had written himself, inspired by a book of the same name, "The Fault In Our Stars", he immediately flew to Perth and quickly signed a contract with EMI Music Australia on June 5th, which remained confidential for a year. In the months that followed, according to his manager at the music production company, a project was set up to connect with different co-songwriters and producers to help him and allow him to gain insight into how Troye had a very strong vision of himself. In a video announcing his extended play titled TRXYE (read letter by letter in English), which was later released on August 15, 2014, he says he has written "over forty songs" in what was the "most intense and insane journey" to date. His first single released on July 25 of the same year, "Happy Little Pill", was characterized by indie pop with a melancholic conception that addresses themes such as cocaine, dollar bills and antidepressants, and is the highlight and first track on the EP. TRXYE debuted at number 1 on iTunes in 66 countries, peaked at number five on the Billboard 200 the following week, taking it into the top 10. On the ARIA Charts it peaked at number ten and was certified gold by the Australian Recording Industry Association for exceeding 35,000 units sold. A little over a year later, on September 4, 2015, Sivan released his second major label EP, WILD, which was supported by a trilogy of music videos titled Blue Neighbourhood, released between September and December 2015. Additionally, the EP served as a "lead-in" to Sivan's debut album, also titled Blue Neighbourhood, released on December 4, 2015. The album featured a single, "YOUTH", co-written by Allie X, which was certified platinum in Australia, New Zealand, Sweden, and the United States, and its music video has over 60 million views. To support the EP and album, Sivan went on three tours, which spanned 2015 and 2016, visiting North America, Asia, and Europe.
After releasing the song "There for You" with Martin Garrix, Troye spent 2017 working on his second studio album.
In January 2018, Sivan released the single "My My My!", which reached number four on iTunes worldwide and number 80 on the Billboard Hot 100. A week later, he released the promotional single "The Good Side". Both served as the lead single for the singer's second studio album, Bloom, released in August of the same year.
Also in 2018, the singer released Revelation, a song written for the soundtrack of the film Boy Erased, together with Jón Þór Birgisson. The song was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song.
In August 2020, the singer released his fifth EP, entitled In a Dream.
In 2007, he starred as Oliver Twist in the musical Oliver! at the Regal Theatre. In 2008, he was cast in a Western Australian short film, Betrand the Terrible. In February 2008, he began acting in the Hollywood film X-Men Origins: Wolverine as a young James Howlett. Parts of his telethon performances were posted on YouTube, which caught the attention of a Hollywood agent, who contacted him and asked him to record an audio recording. Although Kodi Smit-McPhee had already been cast for the role, Kodi was unable to do so due to his work on another film, The Road. In July 2009, he auditioned for the lead role in Spud, an adaptation of the 2005 novel of the same name by South African writer John van de Ruit. Filming took place in South Africa from early March to mid-April 2010. The film was released in South Africa on 3 December 2010 and won awards at the South African Film and Television Awards, including Best Leading Actor in a Feature Film. Two sequels to the film, Spud 2: The Madness Continues and Spud 3: Learning to Fly, were released in 2013 and 2014, respectively.
After a few years away from acting, Troye starred in the film Boy Erased, based on the book Boy Erased: A Memoir by Garrard Conley. The film premiered in November 2018 in the United States.
In September 2012, Troye began vlogging on YouTube after having uploaded only music videos since October 1, 2007. His first vlog, five years after his channel's existence on the site, already had 27 thousand subscribers, and by March 2016, he had reached the mark of 4 million subscribers and had over 200 million total views. In Australia, his channel is the most popular in terms of subscribers. Due to his music career, Troye no longer posts videos on his channel.
