Stephen Rootย (born November 17, 1951) is an American actor. He has starred as Jimmy James on theย NBCย sitcomย NewsRadioย (1995โ1999), as Milton Waddams in the filmย Office Spaceย (1999), and voicedย Bill Dauteriveย andย Buck Stricklandย on the animated seriesย King of the Hillย (1997โ2010, 2025โpresent).
Root has appeared in numerousย Coen brothers films, includingย O Brother, Where Art Thou?ย (2000),ย The Ladykillersย (2004),ย No Country for Old Men (2007),ย The Ballad of Buster Scruggsย (2018), andย The Tragedy of Macbethย (2021). Other notable film roles includeย Daveย (1993),ย Dodgeballย (2004),ย Idiocracyย (2006),ย Cedar Rapidsย (2011),ย Selma (2014),ย Trumboย (2015),ย Get Outย (2017), andย On the Basis of Sexย (2018).
His television roles have included Capt. K'Vada in theย Star Trek: The Next Generationย two-part episode "Unification" (1991) and Hawthorne Abendsen in seasons 2โ4 of the seriesย The Man in the High Castle. He has supporting roles in a variety ofย HBOย series, includingย Boardwalk Empire,ย True Blood,ย Perry Mason, andย Succession. He starred as Monroe Fuches in theย HBOย dark comedyย seriesย Barry, for which he was nominated for aย Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series in 2019.
