Martin Faranan McDonaghΒ (/mΙkΛdΙnΙ/; born 26 March 1970)Β is a British-Irish playwright and filmmaker. He is known for hisΒ absurdistΒ dark humour, which often challenges the modern theatre aesthetic. He has wonΒ numerous accolades, including anΒ Academy Award, sixΒ BAFTA Awards, twoΒ Golden Globe Awards, and threeΒ Olivier Awards, in addition to nominations for fiveΒ Tony Awards.
His plays, many of which have been produced on theΒ West EndΒ andΒ Broadway, includeΒ The Beauty Queen of Leenane,Β The Cripple of InishmaanΒ (both 1996),Β The Lonesome West (1997),Β The Lieutenant of InishmoreΒ (2001),Β The PillowmanΒ (2003),Β A Behanding in Spokane (2010), andΒ HangmenΒ (2015).
McDonagh won theΒ Academy Award for Best Live Action Short FilmΒ forΒ Six ShooterΒ and has received nominations forΒ six other Academy AwardsΒ for his work onΒ In BrugesΒ (2007),Β Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, MissouriΒ (2017), andΒ The Banshees of InisherinΒ (2022).
