Damien Sayre ChazelleΒ (/ΚΙΛzΙl/; born January 19, 1985)Β is a French-American filmmaker.Β He directed the psychological dramaΒ WhiplashΒ (2014), the musical romanceΒ La La LandΒ (2016), the biographical dramaΒ First ManΒ (2018), and the period black comedyΒ BabylonΒ (2022).
ForΒ Whiplash, he was nominated for theΒ Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. His biggest commercial success came withΒ La La Land, nominated for 14 Academy Awards, winning six, includingΒ Best Director, making him theΒ youngestΒ person to win the award at age 32.Β He has also directed two episodes of theΒ NetflixΒ limited seriesΒ The EddyΒ (2020).
