She rose to prominence in 2012 when her rap song "My Vag" became popular onΒ YouTube. She then released her debut album,Β Yellow RangerΒ (2014), and appeared on theΒ MTVΒ comedy seriesΒ Girl Code (2014β2015). She expanded to films with supporting roles in the comediesΒ Neighbors 2: Sorority RisingΒ (2016),Β Ocean's 8Β (2018),Β Crazy Rich AsiansΒ (2018), andΒ Jumanji: The Next LevelΒ (2019). She won a Golden Globe Award for her starring role as a grieving young woman inΒ The FarewellΒ (2019).
Since 2020, Awkwafina has been a co-creator, writer, and executive producer of theΒ Comedy CentralΒ seriesΒ Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens, where she also plays a fictionalized version of herself. In 2021, she portrayedΒ KatyΒ in theΒ Marvel Cinematic UniverseΒ superhero filmΒ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
