June 1989
A decade after the brutal murder of Robin (Dick Grayson), a retired, haunted Bruce Wayne lives alone in a decaying Wayne Manor. When a wave of mutant violence and Two-Face push Gotham to the brink, the 55-year-old billionaire succumbs to his inner demons and once again becomes Batman. Teaming with teenage Carrie Kelley, he battles the feral Mutant Leader and awakens his greatest nemesis, the Joker, from catatonia. As Commissioner Ellen Yindel declares war on the vigilante, Batman faces a final, brutal showdown with the Joker at a carnival. Broken but victorious, Bruce dies of a heart attack, leaving Carrie to inherit his mission.
