  • misterwolf As the two bond further, Tom resists Riley's offer to take him to her friend, David, who is an elderly catholic priest, to have his sins forgiven, stating that he does not trust catholics. Riley introduces him to her entire family, especially her daughters, and they befriend him instantly. Before Tom can apologize to Riley for her husband's death after she tells him he died, she reveals that she does not miss him, stating that it was an arranged and abusive marriage, which was ended when he died of a drug overdose.

  • misterwolf Later on, Tom learns that he is dying of leukemia, but he decides to keep it a secret not wanting even his own friends, especially Riley, to be traumatized. To set his affairs in order, he chooses to find further redemption with Riley by helping her oldest daughter, Aaliyah, take care of her infant sister, Lyla. Meanwhile, Riley's best friend Danny, who is also Richard's assistant, advises Riley to keep trying to convince Tom to trust himself enough to have his sins forgiven. She finally manages to do so, but is still somewhat skeptical of speaking to David. Tom's condition worsens, and he reluctantly decides to tell Riley about his illness when it is at its worst. Adam dies of typhoid, and Richard has him cremated as part of his wishes, while Danny's son Jake is arrested for petty theft.

His sins finally forgiven, he continues to set his affairs in order with Riley's help. Alex, Richard's son, is hospitalized after an altercation at a diner. David is told by Tom that he himself is dying, and asks him to prepare a funeral for when it is time; David agrees.

  • misterwolf Riley cares for Tom throughout the remaining months; one day, she finds him violently throwing up blood in the bathroom, thus now making it impossible for anyone in her house to deny that he is dying. In the remaining weeks of the current month, Tom is still coughing up blood, though he has avoided throwing up a second time. Riley contemplates abandoning her plan to move away, but after Tom is told of it, he encourages her to follow her heart when he is no longer breathing.

  • misterwolf Alex, Richard's son, is brutally murdered in an altercation at a diner; Riley and Richard bury him. Meanwhile, Tom's condition worsens even further, and he starts throwing up blood once again. Aaliyah is able to sustain him with medicine long enough for Riley to arrive and treat his illness. Having only one week left to live, Tom requests that Riley helps him set one final affair in order; help him reconcile with his son. A sobbing Riley agrees to it and lets him use the telephone.

  • misterwolf Now extremely frail, Tom is on his deathbed. He accepts a heartbroken Riley and her family as his friends and tearfully thanks them for helping him come to terms with his crimes, and then dies peacefully. At Tom's funeral, having been encouraged by his earlier words before his death, Riley decides to move on with her children, while Richard gives her a jar containing Adam's ashes. He decides to stay in San Francisco and bids Riley farewell, as she does to Tom at his grave.
