  • jakubduda The film begins with the interrogation of a Czech spy in Moscow. But now we move to May 5, 1945, this date is historically very important for the Czech Republic, it is the day when the Prague Uprising broke out in the capital city of Prague, and Czech patriots and partisans, with the help of American and Soviet troops, defeated the Nazis. The film contains actual footage. At that time, however, it was decided that a certain part of Bohemia would be liberated by US troops and another by the Soviet army. This film shows an alternative history in which it was the Americans who liberated Prague and who took over the entire republic and not the Soviet Union. The Second World War has just ended, the 1940s are in the second half, Casablanca, It's a Wonderful Life, They Were Expendable, Gilda, The Ox-Bow Incident and many others are playing in cinemas. American, Czech and French music plays on the radio, you can pay with dollars, English is the second official language and in a capital city somewhere in Central Europe, Mayor Böhm (a fictional character) begins to dream his big dream. He plans with President Kutlvašr to join the United States of America, create the 51st state and rename it Masarykton (in honor of their late friend, former president T.G. Masaryk, who loved America and had above-standard friendly relations with Hoover and Wilson). Böhm and Kutlvašr contacted Jan Masaryk, who, given that Czechoslovakia did not fall into the hands of communism and the Soviet Union, never had any skirmishes with Stalin and thus was never assassinated. He now lives in exile with his wife, the American writer and music critic Marcia Davenport. Jan Masaryk reveals a document that reveals that Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk already had the same plan but did not have time to implement it. Jan will help them apply for joining the USA. After which the delegation is supposed to arrive in Prague and the conditions for joining are drawn up. Now Josef Novotný is called, nobody knows anything about him, but he is said to be responsible for the fact that Slovakia became part of Czechoslovakia, even though he was only a small boy at the time. He is also said to be a war veteran and for years worked as a spy and led the democratic resistance. This mysterious man must ensure that everything is fulfilled and Czechoslovakia is ready for annexation. A flourishing economy, culture, sports, infrastructure and billions of dollars from the Marshall Plan help to fulfill the plan. However, there is one point that causes problems and time is running out. A serial killer known as the Siberian Yuri is roaming the streets of Prague. Yuri is said to be a Russian who was imprisoned in Siberia for a long time and trained to kill. He came to Czechoslovakia with the Soviet army with the mission of murdering Nazis. When the war ended, he hid here and started murdering citizens. Josef, who strikingly resembles a detective like Sherlock Holmes, has been on his trail for a long time, but Yuri still escapes. Josef, like Holmes, has his Watson and he is a young detective and a determined Christian, which caused him problems during WW2 and he was imprisoned and forced to work in the mines, his name is Rudyard Duba. The question remains whether he will be able to catch him in time and whether Masarykton will pass the test and join the American people. Everything will be decided the moment Yuri takes over Josef's wife. Josef is determined to do everything and get his family back, but Yuri flees to Moscow, where Rudyard Duba is already looking for him, because the last American condition, the death of the Siberian Yuri, is still not fulfilled. And if it is fulfilled, Masarykton will become part of the USA already on July 4. Rudyard finally catches him and shoots him, he still manages to take a photo and send it along with a letter to Josef. However, he is caught by Russian agents and interrogated after several days of imprisonment. We now return to the scene at the beginning of the film where Rudyard is asked his name. Rudyard Duba roars at the top of his lungs! Country of origin? Rudyard looks at the calendar on the wall and sees that it is the 4th of July. He smiles with tears in his eyes and proudly shouts the United States of America! The scenes in Moscow were filmed in Budapest. At the end, we see footage of all of Kingston listening to the radio report, where moderator Remek comments on the events from Wenceslas Square, and the whole nation hears Prime Minister Böhm giving a speech: "The dream has come true..." exactly this sentence is on his statue today. before the credits appear, the fates of the main characters are described here, followed by thanks to those who resisted the Nazis and fought for the freedom of Czechoslovakia.
