Synopsis

John Constantine is a 2025 American superhero film based on the DC Comics character of the same name. Produced by DC Studios, Legendary Pictures, and The Stone Quarry, it is the fifth installment in the DC Legacy Universe (DCLU). The film was directed by Breck Eisner from a screenplay by Zack Snyder, Jerry Bruckheimer, and David S. Goyer, and stars Charlie Hunnam in the title role along with Abbie Cornish, Levi Miller, Ben Kingsley, Daniel Kaluuya, Terrence Howard, Norman Reedus, and Peter Stormare. Set in 1983 Los Angeles, California, chain-smoking cynic and con artist John Constantine comes into conflict with the demon Trigon (reprised by Stormare) and must protect the city from being destroyed by him. During the film's production, it was announced to be released in the DCLU; with a budget of $389 million, it is one of the most expensive films ever made. John Constantine opened in theaters on February 5th, 2025; it received mixed reviews and is regarded as the weakest film in the DCLU, with praise for its cast, tone, action sequences, visuals, and humor but with criticism to the plot, direction, and screenplay. Despite this, the film was a box-office success and broke several box-office records during its initial run, grossing $946 million worldwide against a break-even point of $230 million. A sequel is in development as well as an upcoming Justice League Dark film.

  • misterwolf Plot: Cynical con artist John Constantine has been shunned by God for attempting suicide; one day, he consults disgraced archangel Gabriel, who refuses to help him, as he himself is not an angel of God anymore. Constantine is also denied the chance of seeing his wife, Epiphany Greaves, by her entire family, who believe him to be insane and tell him that they will annul his marriage with her if she keeps refusing to divorce him.

  • misterwolf However, despite her family's threats that they will cut her finances, she temporarily severs her ties with them until they see that Constantine is right. Outraged, they cut off her finances in an attempt to make her return, but she still refuses and Constantine manages to get her a decent career to work while he is away. Meanwhile, the demon Trigon sends a warning that he and his master will wipe out the entire human population and rule the entire world. Constantine and his apprentice Chas Kramer contact Hennessy, who informs them that Trigon is already in the world, but he is later murdered by Trigon. Homicide detective Evans joins Constantine and Kramer while Gabriel joins forces with Trigon.

  • misterwolf Constantine later communicates with a half-demon, who tells him that Trigon is at the abandoned London church. Gabriel intervenes on his mission and kills Kramer and Evans, before he kidnaps Epiphany. Before dying, Evans gives Constantine a holy cross, and reveals that if he stops Trigon and saves the world, his soul will be redeemed.

  • misterwolf Traveling to London, Constantine arrives at the church too late however, as Trigon has freed his master, Sabbac. Constantine is easily overpowered by Gabriel after a fierce fight that leaves him gravely injured. Epiphany breaks free of her bonds and destroys Gabriel's necklace, sapping him of his immortality, and then sends him to Hell using the Lord's Prayer. Just as Constantine is about to accept his fate, Epiphany convinces him to give up his suicidal hatred over himself, and he is healed.

  • misterwolf Kramer, who was revived as an angel, arrives and subdues Trigon, eventually banishing him and allowing Constantine to fight Sabbac, while Epiphany escapes the church just as the police and the ambulance arrive. Constantine is overpowered by Sabbac, but Kramer returns and helps him, before Constantine sacrifices himself to kill Sabbac and destroy the church with his previously newfound magic abilities.

  • misterwolf Before ascending to Heaven, Kramer revives Constantine, allowing him to emerge from the flames of the church's rubble to receive medical attention. Epiphany suddenly reveals that she is pregnant; a shocked Constantine then blesses both himself and Epiphany with life, knowing that evil will arise again. 42 years later in 2025, Constantine is watching Clark Kent's job interview from afar in Metropolis under Bruce Wayne's instructions. Before the end credits roll, Constantine walks away in silence to see his wife and their grown up daughter.
