Synopsis

The Mystery of Bigfoot is a 2022 American action thriller film written, co-produced, and directed by David Twohy. It is based on the myth of the same name. The film stars James Badge Dale and Anne Hathaway, as well as supporting actors William Fichtner, Laurence Fishburne, Tom Hiddleston, Jeffrey Wright and Michael Keaton. It follows several hunters, lead by husband and wife team Allison and David Lane, who team up to find a sasquatch that resembles a giant Gorilla ape roaming in a snowy forest and terrorizing other people. The Mystery of Bigfoot opened in theaters on November 6th, 2022; the film received mixed reviews from critics, who praised the visual style, action sequences, score, themes, and Hathaway and Dale's performances, but Twohy's direction drew polarized responses, while its character development was harshly criticized. Despite the critical reaction, The Mystery of Bigfoot was a financial success and broke several box-office records during its theatrical run, grossing $819 million worldwide against its break-even point of $100 million. It was also nominated for numerous Academy Awards, including Best Supporting Actor for both Dale and Fishburne, and Best Actress for Hathaway; however, Fichtner was nominated for a Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Supporting Actor, as well as a Stinkers Bad Movie Award for Worst Villain. A sequel entitled The Return of Bigfoot was released 2 years later.

  • misterwolf Plot: In the snowy forest of the Pacific Northwest, two fishermen are murdered by an unidentified creature. As the crime goes global, many believe that it was a bear who killed them. A former sheriff's deputy, David Lane, and his wife Allison, who are both hunters, deduce that it is the mysterious Bigfoot, and decide to recruit two more hunters to stop it from killing more people.

  • misterwolf The hunters they find are their old friends Andy Xavier and Victor Raymond. They agree to join in, and they return to the forest to track Bigfoot. Allison sets up a camp for the group, and then goes out hunting for food and supplies. She shoots a deer down and finds an abandoned cabin, where she grabs medkits, ammo, and dynamite. She returns to the camp, and she cooks the deers meat and makes leather with its hide.

  • misterwolf The group disassembles the camp, bags the supplies, and continues their pursuit. A tree is knocked down and presumably kills Xavier. Allison and David deduce that it was Bigfoot who caused it. They are soon found by McDale, who attempts to arrest them, but Bigfoot appears and breaks his neck, killing him. The group outruns Bigfoot, and they set up camp in the mountains.

  • misterwolf Victor is seemingly killed while trying to fight a grizzly bear. Allison finishes the bear by stabbing it to death. Two hunters named Danny Quinto and Will Carter join them, and they disassemble the camp and begin following Bigfoot's tracks. Xavier is revealed to be alive, and he deliberately attacks and mortally injures David. Raymond has also survived, and he kills Xavier as he knew that he faked his own death and intended to kill the group.

  • misterwolf The group carries David to an abandoned log house. Bigfoot appears in the midst of the woods, not knowing that the group is in the cabin. David implores the group, especially Allison, to run, and Allison tearfully says goodbye to him before he gets up and fights Bigfoot. Allison witnesses Bigfoot killing David before running away.

  • misterwolf David, fatally wounded by Bigfoot's claws, notices the latter following the group, but he finishes himself off by putting a bullet in his head, distracting Bigfoot. As the groups sets up the camp, Allison mourns the loss of her husband, but Raymond comforts her. Bigfoot eventually catches up to them and kills Danny. Will is seriously injured, but Allison disfigures Bigfoot by shooting a gas can, defeating it and forcing to retreat. Allison takes leadership of the group and vows to continue her pursuit of the creature as the end credits roll.
