When Jack and Gennady first meet, it’s strictly business—both men are loyal to their countries and the Cold War makes them natural enemies. However, over time, as they engage in back-channel dealings and secret meetings across various neutral European countries, they develop an unlikely friendship. They bond over their shared frustrations with the system, love for their families, and the personal toll that espionage has taken on their lives. As the Cold War intensifies, both men find themselves in increasingly dangerous situations. Jack is pressured by his superiors to push Gennady to commit treason, while Gennady faces threats from the KGB, who suspect he may be compromised. Yet, both men remain loyal to one another, even when they are forced into impossible choices. When the Soviet Union collapses in 1991, Gennady’s life is in immediate danger.
