202X. The United States, facing crisis after crisis, has torn itself apart at the seams. The two largest, but far from only factions to wage war against each other, are the right-wing "Constitutional" government based out of Denver and the liberal "Union" government based out of Washington. The fire has risen. Former high school teacher Maisie Fletcher, caught in the middle of it all, joins a volunteer brigade in order to survive, only to find herself fighting alongside a familiar face: a 16 year old former troubled student of hers named Mason Kincaid, who has faked his age in order to enlist. They later encounter another volunteer named Dana Boone, all of three of them partaking in the defense of the city of Springfield, Illinois.
