EMBER CITY

The Conciliator: The Young King

"A boy of fourteen sits the sharpest seat in the world." Maegor the Cruel is dead — found on the Iron Throne, wrists opened, blood pooled in the blades. His great-nephew Jaehaerys, only fourteen years old, is the last Targaryen male. His mother Alyssa and her new husband Rogar Baratheon act as regents, but they do not govern so much as quarrel — Rogar wants power; Alyssa wants her children safe and her new marriage to mean something. Jaehaerys, quiet and watchful beyond his years, listens and learns. The first crisis comes immediately: he has already secretly wed his sister Alysanne, a match made in love and Valyrian custom that nonetheless scandalises the realm. Rather than apologise, Jaehaerys rides to the Sept of Remembrance on Vermithor and addresses the High Septon directly — reasonable, unafraid, and utterly immovable. The Faith yields. The season ends with Jaehaerys formally declared of age and Rogar Baratheon stripped of the regency — a masterclass in patient, bloodless power from a teenager.

Fire & Blood: The Iron Throne

"Power is not won. It must be maintained — in blood and in fire, forever." A realm is not a conquest — it is a living thing that must be governed. This film spans the later years of Aegon's reign and the political fires that no dragon can extinguish. The Faith of the Seven turns against the Targaryens over the matter of incestuous marriage; armed sparrows and warrior-septons fill the streets of King's Landing. Aegon must choose between the sword and diplomacy. Meanwhile, the question of succession tears at the court: his elder son Aenys by Rhaenys is dreamy and weak-chinned; his younger son Maegor by Visenya is cruel and powerful. Visenya, ever her son's champion, works in shadow to secure Maegor's place. Aegon, ageing and increasingly withdrawn since Rhaenys's death, broods atop his castle, knowing that the realm he burned into being may not outlast him. The film's centrepiece is a tense political summit at the Starry Sept where Aegon, using no dragon at all, outmanoeuvres the High Septon entirely through force of personality and strategic concession. The film ends with Aegon's death — a stroke, it is said, brought on by the burden of decades — and a final image of Balerion, alone and immense, circling the Red Keep as though mourning his rider.

Fire & Blood: The Last Kingdoms

"The North remembers — and so does dragonfire." The conquest is far from complete. Two great obstacles remain. In the north, the ancient castle of Harrenhal — greatest fortress ever built, its towers touching the clouds — belongs to Harren the Black, King of the Isles and the Rivers, who believes his walls can defy any army. Aegon and Balerion disabuse him of that notion in a single terrible night, the stones of Harrenhal melting like candles around Harren and his sons as they cower in the topmost tower. Then Rhaenys flies south to Dorne, the one kingdom that refuses to bend. In Dorne she finds desert and silence — the Dornish fight no battles but strike from shadows, burning Targaryen supply lines, killing soldiers in their sleep. Meraxes is brought down by a scorpion bolt through the eye above the castle of the Hellholt. Rhaenys and her dragon are captured; the Targaryens wage a decade of fire and blood against Dorne in revenge. This film is also Visenya's — it is she who hunts the assassins who strike at Aegon, she who forges the Kingsguard from the seven greatest knights of the realm. The film ends with Rhaenys declared dead and Aegon, grief-stripped, carving her face into the wood of the Iron Throne.

Fire & Blood: The Dragon's Landing

"A new realm is not built in a day — it is burned into being." The story opens on the isle of Dragonstone, where Aegon Targaryen — Lord of the island fortress and last scion of old Valyrian blood in the west — gazes upon the crudely drawn map he has painted of the Seven Kingdoms. For years he has dreamed of uniting what no man has ever unified. With his two sister-wives, Visenya and Rhaenys, and their three dragons, he lands on the mainland with a modest host and proclaims himself King of All Westeros. One by one the petty kingdoms react: some kneel, some defy. The Gardener kings of the Reach and the Lannister lords of the Rock forge an alliance and march a great army of half a million men to crush the upstart. At the Field of Fire, Aegon and both his sisters ride their dragons simultaneously for the first and last time in the war, unleashing a cataclysm of dragonfire. The Gardener dynasty is extinguished, the Lannisters submit. In the east, Visenya flies alone on Vhagar to the Eyrie, where a child-king and his regent mother yield without a drop of blood. The film closes with the raising of the Targaryen banner over newly-named King's Landing and Aegon's coronation beneath the open sky.
