James Francis CameronΒ (born August 16, 1954) is a Canadian filmmaker. He is a major figure in the post-New HollywoodΒ era and often uses novel technologies with aΒ classical filmmaking style. Cameron first gained recognition for writing and directingΒ The Terminator (1984), and found further success withΒ AliensΒ (1986),Β The AbyssΒ (1989),Β Terminator 2: Judgment DayΒ (1991), andΒ True LiesΒ (1994), as well asΒ Avatar (2009) andΒ its sequels. He directed, wrote, co-produced, and co-editedΒ TitanicΒ (1997), winningΒ Academy Awards forΒ Best Picture,Β Best Director, andΒ Best Film Editing. He is a recipient ofΒ various other industry accolades, and three of his films have been selected for preservation in theΒ National Film RegistryΒ by theΒ Library of Congress.
Cameron co-founded the production companiesΒ Lightstorm Entertainment,Β Digital Domain, and Earthship Productions. In addition to filmmaking, he is aΒ National GeographicΒ explorer-in-residence. He has produced many documentaries on deep-ocean exploration, includingΒ Ghosts of the AbyssΒ (2003) andΒ Aliens of the Deep (2005). Cameron has also contributed toΒ underwater filmingΒ andΒ remote vehicle technologies and helped create the digital 3DΒ Fusion Camera System. In 2012, Cameron became the first person to solo descend theΒ Mariana Trench, the deepest part of the Earth's ocean, in theΒ Deepsea ChallengerΒ submersible.
Cameron's filmsΒ have grossed over $8Β billion worldwide, making him theΒ second-highest-grossing film director. Three of Cameron's films are among the top fourΒ highest-grossing films of all time;Β AvatarΒ (2009),Β Avatar: The Way of WaterΒ (2022) andΒ TitanicΒ (1997) are the highest, third-highest and fourth-highest-grossing films of all time, respectively. Cameron directed the first film to gross over $1Β billion, the first two films to gross over $2Β billion, and is the only director to have had three films grossing over $2 billion.Β In 2010,Β TimeΒ named Cameron one of theΒ 100 most influential people in the world.
