Amritsar
City in the Punjab province of modern-day India, the main bastion of the Sikh culture partially thanks to having the holiest place of worship in Sikhism - Harmandir Sahib or the Golden Temple. Historically, the city has been the setting of many tragic events connected to Sikh independence aspirations, such as the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre perpetrated by the British Indian Army and the 1984 Operation Blue Star, the inhuman brutality of which then drove two of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's Sikh bodyguards to assassinate her in retaliation.
