Biography
Alvin the Chipmunk 2 is a 2019 action-adventure comedy film based on the video game series published by Sega, and the sequel to Alvin the Chipmunk (2017). Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and Co-Directed by Tim Story, Rob Letterman, and Mike Mitchell, the film stars Justin Long, Colin O'Donoghue, Zachary Levi, Mandy Moore, Emma Thompson, Tom Hanks, Tom Hiddleston, and Nicolas Cantu reprising their roles, with Nolan North and Nathan Vetterlein joining the cast. In the film, after settling in Green Hills, Alvin tries to prove himself as a hero, but his big test comes when the evil Doctor Hook returns, alongside his new rival, Raphael the Ninja Turtle, in search of the Master Emerald.
Following the success of the first film, Lionsgate and New Line Cinema announced the sequel in August 2017, with Long, O'Donoghue, and the rest of the cast reprised their roles. Filming took place from March to June 2018 in Vancouver and Hawaii.
Alvin the Chipmunk 2 was theatrically released in several markets on May 28, 2019, and in the United States on June 21, by Lionsgate, New Line Cinema and Regency Enterprises. Like its predecessor, the film set several box office records and received generally positive reviews for its action sequences, humor, and performances, but criticized its screenplay, runtime, and pacing. Many critics considered the film an improvement over its predecessor. It grossed over $405 million worldwide.
A sequel, Alvin the Chipmunk 3, is scheduled for 2021, while Raphael, a spin-off series starring North, is in production and is scheduled to be released in 2020.
