The Dark Knight Returns is a dystopian graphic novel following a 55-year-old Bruce Wayne who comes out of retirement after ten years to rescue a crime-ridden Gotham City. The Mutant Leader, a relapsed Two-Face and newly awakened Joker comes against him. As Cold War tensions rise, the U.S. government sends Superman to shut Batman down. In this grim future, most of the Justice League has been forced into hiding or compliance by the government, leaving Carrie Kelley and an older, one-armed Oliver Queen (Green Arrow) as the only legacy heroes left actively fighting by Batman’s side.
