While the original X-Men are stranded on the moon, a crisis strikes Earth. Professor Charles Xavier discovers that Mister Sinister is kidnapping mutants for gruesome experimentation. With no other options, Xavier desperately assembles a secondary, surrogate team of X-Men: Havok, Vulcan, Banshee, Petra, Sway, and Morph. Bursting with overconfidence at their sudden promotion to Earth's premier mutant team, the rookie squad launches a guns-blazing assault on Sinister's stronghold. However, the villain is fully prepared. Tipped off by spies embedded with Xavier's own school, Sinister anticipates their tactics. The rookies put up a valiant, desperate defense, but they are outmatched by Sinister's cold calculations. In a horrific scene, Sinister systematically executes Banshee, Petra, Sway, Morph, and Cyclops's brother, Vulcan. Only Havok is spared. Sinister intentionally lets him escape, desiring Havok to act as a weapon to instill terror in Xavier. Havok returns to the mansion, screaming at Xavier, blaming the Professor's desperation for the brutal murder of his brother and friends. Realizing the unbearable weight of this tragedy-and knowing the devastating fallout that will occur when his primary leader, Cyclops, returns to find his brother dead-Xavier makes a dark, deeply selfish decision. Using Cerebro, he rewrites Havok's mind, completely erasing the secondary team and Vulcan from his memory. The film concludes as the original X-Men finally land back on Earth. Stepping off the ship, Cyclops suddenly clutches his temples in blinding pain as the psychic shockwave of his brother's erasure ripples through his mind. Jean Grey asks him what is wrong, and Scott looks around, completely black, replying that it was just a headache. In his office, Charles Xavier breaks his telepathic link, opening his eyes to cold silence.
