Erik Lehnsherr, better known as Magneto, is one of the two central antagonists—and ultimately one of the most complex characters—in X-Men: Ashes. Once a revolutionary who fought for mutant freedom, Erik has witnessed the collapse of everything he dedicated his life to protecting. Following the destruction of the X-Men, the Westchester Incident, and the rise of Bastion's Sentinel empire, mutantkind stands on the brink of extinction. Years after the events of Logan, Magneto is an old man imprisoned inside a maximum-security anti-mutant prison. His once-incredible mastery over magnetism has weakened with age, his body is failing, and he believes he has outlived the dream of mutant survival. The world sees him as a defeated relic, but Erik refuses to accept that mutantkind's story should end in ashes.
