Gastornis was a large, flightless bird that lived 55 to 45 million years ago, standing about six feet tall and weighing several hundred pounds. It had a massive skull and a powerful, hooked beak, but recent evidence suggests it was carnivorous, using its beak to tear flesh. Its wings were likely for insulation, and it had powerful legs for running, and armed with talons.
