Antonio is a former sea captain and the ardent enemy of Duke Orsino, having been banished from Illyria. He discovers a half-dead Sebastian after the shipwreck and nurses him back to health. Although disappointed that Sebastian wants to set out for Illyria as soon as he is well, Antonio kindly offers him money for the journey...but later, despite the danger involved, he follows after his friend. Unfortunately, he finds not Sebastian but Viola, who is in danger of being killed by Sir Andrew Aguecheek. Antonio saves her, thinking that she is Sebastian, but is soon afterwards arrested by Orsino's officers while Viola wonders why a complete stranger helped her out.
