In 1956 Kansas, a sudden tornado sweeps the Gale family house into the clouds with a teen proto-feminist Dorothy and her dog Toto trapped inside. They crash land on top of Salem the Wicked Witch of the East in the middle of Munchkin Country - part of the Land of Oz located in Nonestica. Bestowed with the gift of the Rainbow Slippers which generate magical powers based on her moods by Glinda the Good Witch of the North and South, Dorothy resolves to free the lands of Oz and Nonestica from the tyranny of Elphaba the Wicked Witch of the West before returning home to Kansas somehow. In seeking the aid of the Wizard of Oz over at the Emerald City, she adopts four traveling companions who will help her overthrow Elphaba - a lonely China Doll girl wanting a new family (or kin), a scarecrow wanting a new brain, a tin woodsman wanting a new heart, and a scared lion wanting to gain courage to become king.
