She has been raised with the full formation of a Tudor royal woman: she speaks Latin, French, and Spanish, plays the virginal, embroiders with unusual skill, and has been shaped by the court of the first unified English monarchy. Henry VII chose her personally as a ward, an act both political (demonstrating the crown's reach across its empire) and genuinely paternal. She is wholly English, wholly Tudor in every dimension of her identity. When Henry VIII ascends the throne — magnificent, dangerous, brilliant — Eleanor must navigate the new king's court while managing an arranged marriage to Sir Thomas Wyndham, a capable but initially unremarkable courtier who grows into something far more significant under the pressure of loving a woman of extraordinary intelligence in a court that finds her presence both fascinating and unsettling.
