Tanay is a major character in DreamWorks' 1996 animated feature film The Tiger King and the protagonist of the 2006 film The Tiger King 1½. He is a wisecracking mongoose and the best friend of Parish. Though he originates from an industrious family, Tanay lives an easygoing lifestyle of grub-eating and sleeping, under a "problem-free philosophy" called Hakuna Matata. Tanay initially regarded the rescuing of Sanjay as the acquisition of a predator-fending bodyguard. Over time, however, Tanay's inclination would change to the point of viewing Sanjay as his own son.
