Follow the journey of teenage autistic girl Destinee Anderson, as she adapts to high school and befriends all manner of different people: Elijah Turner, closeted gay sports player who has a crush on shy British tech nerd Enzo Woodward; Daniel Sato, Mexican American loner who acts aloof most of the time; her teacher Mr Evan Witherman, who is as unimpressed as they come but has hidden layers underneath the surface; Qiang Jiao-long (aka JL), a Chinese-Vietnamese trans feminine boy who has little to no support from his family; and lastly Veruca Woodstock, a confident rich blonde who helps Destinee break out of her bubble. She lives with her hardworking teen mother/adoptive sister Lyla and loving sickly grandmother Beatrice. She finds an abandoned cd player that she uses to play music without knowledge of its origin, learns she's falling in love with Daniel, and gripes with the overwhelming desire to help her family financially and prove to the world that she is actually capable of thinking for and believing in herself.
