Synopsis

Sixteen-year-old Malencia (Cia) Vale is an aspiring student from Five Lakes Colony in future dystopian America. In a mission to revitalize the earth after years of civil and chemical warfare, the United Commonwealth has devised an intense series of tests to pick out the most talented to guide their country back to its former glory. Cia is excited to be chosen along with three other classmates, including the kind and charming Tomas Endress. But when her father, a former Testing candidate himself, reveals the horrifying dreams that have followed his mandatory memory wipe, Cia finds herself caught in a whirlwind of heartbreak, treachery, and people who will do whatever it takes to stay on top. Cia is a brilliant young woman, the youngest of five children, who excels in mechanical engineering and graduates from Five Lakes a year early. She is ecstatic to be chosen for the Testing...until her father shares terrifying memory-dreams that have plagued him and warns her not to trust anyone, no matter what. However, as each phase of the Testing brings her more heartbreak and danger, showing her that the government she once trusted is willing to do unspeakable things for the "greater good," she must forge her own path, make her own mistakes, and balance love with caution again and again.
