Published in 1977, The Silmarillion is set during the first age of Arda, recounting the creation of Middle-Earth, the awakening of the elves, and later on dwarves and men. Using the power bestowed upon them by Eru Iluvatar, the Valar create Middle-earth, Melkor being the strongest among them. He betrays his purpose and wages war against them, killing elves, destroying sources of light, and at last, stealing the Silmarils.
