Published in 1977, The Silmarillion is set during the first age of Arda, recounting the creation of Middle-Earth, the awakening of the elves, and later on dwarves and men. Using the power bestowed upon them by Eru Iluvatar, the Valar create Middle-earth, Melkor being the strongest among them. He betrays his purpose and wages war against them, killing elves, destroying sources of light, and at last, stealing the Silmarils. The Noldor elves pursue Morgoth in want of revenge, and the war of the jewels begins. Through these years, many battles are fought, lives lost and kingdoms fall.
