An everyman meant to symbolise the American dream, Richard is a transfer student of modest means from California. He is insecure with his background and so embellishes it as he has a romantic view of the ancient and elegant and obsesses on wealth and beauty to an unhealthy extent. More an observer than a real participant to the story, Richard is plain - provincial and low-class. This sets him aside to the other characters, who are sophisticated and way too complex to narrate this story half as well. He is perceptive, sympathetic and ironic. He is scruffy to start the book, but immediately pretends to be wealthy to impress his classmates.
