Set in England in 1816, the story, "The Rose That Never Wilt," depicts the fate of Elizabeth, a single maiden in her thirties who fails to marry because of what society considers her supposed ugliness. Her escape from reality is tending a garden, especially a unique rose that never wilts. This rose is preserved for the man who will love her. When Charles, a young architect hired to renovate a nearby mansion, enters her life, their encounters in the garden become more frequent. Charles gradually discovers Elizabeth's inner beauty and, fascinated by her passion for plants, decides to win her heart. After many months of moments together, Charles proposes to Elizabeth. The day after the proposal, Elizabeth gives Charles the title rose that never wilts. For Elizabeth, it is a symbol not only of love but, above all, of the hope of finding a love that has never died in her.
