The film delves into the toxic combination of poverty, fear, and resentment that fueled the group’s rise, while portraying the devastating impact of their reign of terror on the freed Black communities of the South. The story begins in the aftermath of the Civil War. Silas returns to his hometown of Pulaski, Tennessee, to find it in ruins. The once-thriving community is now divided and impoverished, with newly freed Black families attempting to build lives amidst the resentment of defeated Confederate loyalists. Struggling to find purpose in this shattered world, Silas is drawn into the orbit of Nathaniel Lark, a charismatic and manipulative preacher who begins organizing former Confederate soldiers into a secret fraternity, ostensibly to protect their heritage and livelihoods. What begins as a series of small, clandestine gatherings soon evolves into something far more sinister. The group adopts the name "The Ku Klux Klan" and begins a campaign of intimidation and violence, targeting Black citizens, Northern carpetbaggers, and anyone who threatens their vision of the "old South." Silas, initially reluctant, becomes a key figure in the group as he is seduced by Nathaniel’s rhetoric and the camaraderie of his fellow riders.
