In Victorian England, young hatmaker Harlan Hightopp rises to fame with his intricate designs but becomes obsessed with creating a legendary hat called the Crown of Dreams. When his mysterious patron, Lady Lydia Liddell, pressures him to finish it, Harlan discovers the hat can open a portal to Wonderland. Betrayed by Lydia, Harlan follows her through the portal and encounters Wonderland’s strange and eccentric inhabitants. Embracing the chaos around him, Harlan's obsession and grief push him to become the "Mad Hatter." In a final showdown, he thwarts Lydia’s plans to exploit Wonderland’s magic and chooses to stay, finding freedom in his new identity.
