Divorcee Lucy Emerson, along with her sons Michael and Sam, move from the West Coast to the small Miami-adjacent town of Sunny Grove, Florida. There they move in with Lucy’s father, an eccentric mortician with a creepy taxidermy collection. Reptile-infested swamps, insects screeching in the lingering autumn heat, seedy nightclubs, and a shoddy local amusement park glowing in the night, imbue the town with an eerie Southern Gothic atmosphere. Though a 1980s promo for Sunny Grove depicts it as an idyllic, sun-soaked retiree community ornamented with ferns and flowers, it has for decades hidden a disturbingly high homicide rate. Meanwhile, local teenagers are all too aware of the towns true nature, graffitiing blood-drinking monsters on alleyways and abandoned buildings. To Sam’s horror, the town is indeed home to undead creatures, and his older brother Michael has fallen in with a very bad crowd.
