Alejandro has grown old for swashbuckling, and when he sees a teenage boy defending himself from street thugs, he decides to pass the torch (or "sword and mask") onto him. I'm not sure if whether or not it should be a retcon (retroactive-continuity or "re-quel") that ignores the events of the second movie.
