The plot concerns the reopening of a summer camp from which three girls disappeared 15 years before. Their former camp roommate, Emma, who as a successful artist as an adult has always carried guilt over their disappearance, has come back as a counselor with an alterior motive to solve the disappearance while dealing with her own survivor guilt. However, a new tragedy at camp opens more questions and casts suspicions on everyone, including the narrator. The novel was inspired by the classic Australian film Picnic at Hanging Rock.
