Jamal Betrix is a thoughtful, timid 13-year-old with big glasses, a halo of curly afro hair, and a quiet curiosity about the world around him. He’s brilliant and polite but often overthinks things, preferring logic and observation over confrontation. Once close friends with Maya and Leo, he moved away after years of being bullied, carrying unspoken hurt and guilt about never standing up for himself. When he returns for the summer and is pulled into the invisible world, his intelligence and empathy become vital to the group’s survival. Over the course of the story, Jamal learns to find his voice, face his fears, and realize that courage isn’t the absence of fear — it’s choosing to act despite it.
