A Novel
A group of misfit women in a 1930s rural Kentucky mining community find purpose and community as horseback librarians serving rural mountainfolk. Their leader is fierce and fearless Margery, who is determined to prevent corrupt mining magnate Van Cleve's brutal operations from destroying her beloved mountain country. She is joined by impetuous young Englishwoman Alice, trapped in a loveless marriage to Van Cleve's feckless son, Bennett. Rounding out their posse are Izzy, a timid daughter of the local gentry, boisterous Beth, and Sophia, a skilled and fastidious professional librarian.
