Turbot Smeal proved himself to be a highly skilled quartermaster to Wind Jackel and his efforts made them very wealthy. However, he was an unpleasant and mistrustful character. On one occasion Turbot Smeal secretly brokered a deal to transfer Woodtroll slaves to Purlis Havelock rather than return them home to their Deepwoods village as Wind Jackel had agreed. Wind Jackel managed to thwart Smeal's plan and rescued the Woodtrolls. Angered by this Smeal started the fire that killed Wind Jackal's wife, Hirmina, along with all of his children except for Quint.
