Though he appears to be an elderly man with white hair, liver spots, and a hunched posture, Chase is actually only 39 years old. This discrepancy is the result of his superhuman ability: the power to move 50 times faster than a normal human. However, this gift carries a devastating biological toll, as he ages 50 times faster than average every time he utilizes his speed. Originally known as the superhero Track Star, Chase was the youngest member of the Brave Brigades. During his youth, he served as a mentor and "older brother" figure to Robert Robertson III, the son of his close friend and teammate, Robert "Robbie" Robertson II (the hero known as Astral). A pivotal moment in Chase’s history occurred in 2008 when he witnessed the murder of Robbie at the hands of Elliot (Shroud). Despite his speed, he was unable to reach his friend in time, a failure that fueled a deep-seated bitterness toward villains.
