One year after the events of The Amazing Spider-Man, Peter Parker is struggling to find his place in life. He has stopped attending college because he cannot afford tuition and has no stable job, while Gwen Stacy is preparing for a year-long opportunity to study in London. Their relationship remains strong, but Peter's growing insecurity makes him question whether he can keep up with Gwen's future. Meanwhile, Harry Osborn inherits a powerful position at Oscorp after his father's death and learns that he has the same genetic disease that killed Norman. Desperate for a cure, Harry secretly restarts Richard Parker and Curt Connors' research, eventually transforming Max Dillon into Electro. Harry manipulates Electro into believing Spider-Man is standing between him and the power and respect he wants, while Harry discovers that Peter's blood may be the key to curing his illness. As Peter begins to regain his confidence as Spider-Man, he and Gwen reconcile and decide to make their relationship work despite her plans to leave for London. However, Harry sends Electro to a power plant to lure Peter into a trap, intending to kill him and obtain his blood. During the confrontation, Gwen attempts to save Peter from Harry but is killed. Peter defeats Electro and brutally attacks Harry before Harry escapes. After Gwen's funeral, Peter abandons Spider-Man and becomes consumed by grief and anger. The film ends with Peter returning home to a conspiracy wall dedicated to Harry's destruction, while his Spider-Man suit and Oscorp keycard sit nearby. Peter reaches toward the keycard, leaving his future—and whether he chooses hope or revenge—uncertain.
