1986 Version
Two mustachioed plumbers named Mario and Luigi tumble through a warp pipe into the Mushroom Kingdom, where the laws of physics are suggestions and the real estate market is controlled by a fire-breathing turtle. Armed with nothing but questionable Italian accents, questionable fashion sense, and an ability to gain superpowers from floating vegetables, Mario and Luigi must navigate hostile turtles, and bottomless pits that defy all building codes. Princess Peach awaits rescue while Bowser broods in his castle, convinced that kidnapping is a business strategy. It's a gloriously absurd adventure where jumping on enemies is both genius and therapeutic. The 2023 version of Super Mario Bros was a surprise hit with the 2026 film now having followed suit through Universal Pictures and its animation branch Illumination. However, production on the 1986 version was considered a nightmare. The two leads considered quitting the film citing an awful script, poor special effects and the film was widely panned. It is now considered a cult classic in the "so bad it's good" category. Okay everyone, think of all the popular actors of the 1980s that you think would have been great in this film if it had a better script and no creative issues.
