Virgil Hawkins, a gifted science student at McDuffie High, is about to get a shock to his system. A mysterious gas is unleashed during a gang war in Dakota, causing a fragment of its population to be mutated. Having been exposed to the gas, Virgil gains electromagnetic abilities. With the help of his best friend Richie, Virgil becomes the hero "Static", battling the meta humans who threaten his city and uncovering the sinister motives behind the gas that created them.
