In this world, Earth's overpopulation in the 21st century has led the international government to exile unwanted individuals, such as criminals, cyborgs or mutants, to an area of ​​the Milky Way called the Koprulu4 sector. These exiles then founded several governments which quickly came into conflict with each other. A faction called the Confederacy eventually emerges from this political slump and manages to take control of the area, but its authoritarian nature and brutal methods lead to strong opposition from a rebellious faction, the Sons of Korhal. In December 2499, just before the start of the game, an alien race with highly advanced technologies and psychic powers, the Protoss, made contact with Humanity by destroying a Confederation colony without warning. The Terrans soon discover that another race of aliens, the Zerg, is invading several colonies and that the Protoss are preemptively destroying the planets affected by this invasion.
