This trope applies whenever an orphan is able to find a home, only for their adoptive family to later return them to their orphanage/foster home/what have you. Obviously, this can be deeply damaging to the orphan, who may never feel completely comfortable with any prospective adoptive families. What's more egregious is that most families would never do this with a biological child, suggesting that they hold blood relationships in higher regard than adoptive ones.
