A popular way to establish a character as having a motivation for their depression, angst, distrust of others, aversion to touch, and/or other anti-social tendencies is to have the revelation that they were raped at some point in their past. While it's perfectly possible to use this trope well, when done poorly the rape is only referenced when the victim wants sympathy- mostly from their sexy new true love. In other factors of their lives, it has little impact. However, in Real Life, the trauma of rape can haunt somebody for the rest of their lives. It's professional therapy, not sex with your true love, that brings relief.
