On the one hand, they’re a badass. They have cool clothes, make a grand entrance, and they do it in half the time the hero does. On the other hand, they’re a little (or a lot) less idealistic than The Hero. Maybe they're a Byronic Hero. So, why are they a loner? Generally it turns out to be some kind of betrayal, or maybe they’ve been through some difficult times in their life and now they just want to be alone. Unfortunately, they'll win battles but never win the war. The problem is this attitude makes someone pretty single-minded, and they're afraid to trust anyone as an ally, lest they be a liability/distraction.
