Ascensions lay waste to the realm as every 100 or so years a new ascendant is born and the divine gates open. Gods battle on the mortal plane and kill hundreds of thousands of people. We find our heroes in the interim of years between ascensions as half of the world hunts the born ascendant down as the other half prays to them.
